Abstract

This essay examines how experienced UX researchers and practitioners can support newcomers navigating a challenging job market marked by economic uncertainty, technological disruption, and the growing influence of AI. Drawing inspiration from earlier guidance offered during the 2009 recession, the authors discuss the unique value that seasoned professionals bring through mentoring, networking, career perspective, emotional resilience, and cross-disciplinary experience. They explore both the opportunities and barriers that can arise from generational differences, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, adaptability, and open-mindedness. Through examples of common mentoring questions and reflections on career transitions, the article highlights practical ways experienced practitioners can help emerging professionals build skills, evaluate career paths, and remain adaptable in a rapidly changing field. The authors conclude that by sharing knowledge, fostering connections, and embracing continuous learning, the UX community can help the next generation thrive despite ongoing industry and economic challenges.
